Ever find yourself staring at a long list of beers, ales and ciders and wondering what to choose? Should you go British, Irish, IPA or something local? Ever try a fruity beer? Does your local offer a new beer on tap?

Your friendly publican, of course, can steer you to a particular brew, based on your tastes, and you can even try a sample before committing to a pint. Better yet, consider joining one of The British Beer Company’s Beer Clubs.

All our pubs (except Plymouth) offer these fun groups of like-minded beer drinkers, most held monthly.

Mug Clubs, as the pubs call them, generally meet once a month and feature a brewery who sends a rep to talk about their brews. Mug clubs are free to join. Members sample featured selections and special discounts as well as updates about beers available at their local. Remember to frequent your mug club once every two months to secure your membership; after missing two consecutive months, your “mug” is put up for adoption.

The Portsmouth (N.H.) BBC Beer Mug Club features a brewery every month for special pricing on their beers. ($4 for 16 oz, $5, 20 oz). A brewer rep is on hand to talk about their beers and ciders and answer questions. Members can sample “styles” and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Mug Club members also get discounts on food. Some breweries come in multiple times and host pint nights with giveaways, sometimes there are raffles for the month along with prizes for guests and staff incentives. Portsmouth’s Mug Club meeting takes place the last Tuesday night of every month.

In Manchester (N.H.) Mug Club meetings are held on the last Monday night of the month, starting at 7 p.m. though sometimes the date varies due to the brewery’s availability. Currently there are 85 “mugs” in Manchester.  The pub offers 20 percent off food and draft beers at the mug meeting.

On Cape Cod, the Sandwich BBC mugs meet the third Thursday of the month. Falmouth and Hyannis clubs are due to start up again in the fall.

Worcester’s mugs are meeting Tuesday, July 24, at 7 p.m., with Bay State Brewing, a small brewery out of Leicesterville, Four of their small batch craft beers will be featured. Worcester also offers small food samples. Check their FB page for updates on future dates.

Check the events pages of your local for more information about their beer club dates.
