Beer is our middle name, but you might be pleasantly surprised that we have an excellent wine list, too!

Our periodically scheduled wine tastings are an opportunity to sample wines by region or varietal. Coming up is a Spanish Wine Tasting on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 6 p.m. at the Sandwich BBC. Chef Billy Riopelle has prepared a five-course tasing menu paired with special wines from distinct, mainly Spanish, regions, provided by M.S Walker. Cost is $30.

First course will be tostones, or fried plantains, garnished with avocado, picked onion and a garlic chip. Tostones are a common tapas in Spain and the wine pairing is a fruity one: Vinho Verde, from Portugal.

Second course features Shishito peppers, an Asian variety similar to the Spanish Padrone. It will be served with an Albarino, a crisp white wine sure to balance the smoky flavor of the peppers.

Who doesn’t love rose? And while France gets all the credit, there are some excellent ones from Spain, including the one from Rioja that will accompany prawns in course three.

Expand your palate with course four, Pulpo a la Gallega, or octopus, served with crispy potato and a lemongrass pesto, served and a Rioja, a lovely red.

Priorat,  a red blend from that region in Spain, will be the wine to try with the spicy chorizo  artfully prepared in red wine with rosemary, fennel pollen and truffle cilantro crema in course five.
